How to Steam
Heat up some water in a teapot or pan. Fill about half your bowl with steaming hot water. The water temperature is important. If it has just boiled, let it sit for a minute. You want steam but you don’t want to burn your face or nose!
Add 1 or 2 drops of your stock blend to your bowl of hot water. Do not use more than 2 drops. What if three or more come out? Leave that bowl to steam in the air to kill germs, and try again. Three drops are too strong to steam with. Significant research has shown that you can overwhelm the little nose hairs, causing them to “lay down” at which point you no longer get the benefit of the steam.
Put the bowl on a counter, close your eyes, and put your face over the bowl. If the steam temperature is comfortable for your face, put the towel over your head and breathe. Relax and breathe for a minute or two. You might cough right away—that’s fine. You might want to take your head out, blow your nose to clear it and go back under the towel. These are all good things! You want to clear your sinuses and lungs.
After you finish steaming, blow your nose again. Leave the water to diffuse into the air for a while, then dump.
